Kouvola received the title of town in 1960, and numerous municipal mergers have shaped it since. As a consequence, the area of Kouvola is large, and there are many different neighbourhoods within the city. The distance between Kouvola and Helsinki is one hour by train, and St Petersburg, Russia, is within two hours by train. Main roads 6 and 15 run via Kouvola, which means connections by car are also good. Kouvola is also easy to reach by bus. The good connections have made Kouvola an important logistics hub.
Kouvola is known, among other things, for its military premises – Vekaranjärvi Garrison and the Utti Jaeger Regiment. Tykkimäki Amusement Park is also located in Kouvola. Sport is a popular leisure activity in Kouvola, and the city offers good opportunities for playing different sports. Ice hockey, football, basketball and Finnish baseball are all popular.
